Rangers agree bonuses for Jose Cordoba transfer, announcement days away
Levski Sofia defender Jose Cordoba’s arrival at Ibrox is imminent with Rangers set to pay a combined £3million for the centre-back, according to Kristtian Colina.
The El Marcador TV journalist posted on his X account with an update that the Gers will pay Cordoba’s current club up to £1.1million in bonuses following his transfer, which was agreed for an initial fee of £1.9million.
Colina added that Cordoba is likely to be unveiled in the coming days, where he’ll become Philippe Clement’s second summer signing just days after the Scottish domestic season finished.
22-year-old Cordoba will quickly follow Brazilian left-back Jefte through the door at Ibrox after his transfer was sealed last week, and it’s a clear statement of intent that Clement wants to get his business done as early as possible.
Will Jose Cordoba be a good fit in Rangers’ defence?
For large portions of the last campaign, Rangers had the best defence in the Scottish Premiership, with only their late-season slump in April and May eventually seeing them ship more goals than Celtic.
Still, just 32 goals conceded in 38 games, with 18 Jack Butland clean sheets added to the mix, is still a solid foundation to build on, and one which will only be aided by the additions of Jefte and Cordoba to the backline.
Cordoba, a 12-capped Panama international, was named as the best defender in Bulgarian football last year, and although the Premiership will be a step up in quality, he has all the attributes to be a hit at Ibrox.
With the likes of Connor Goodson and Leon Balogun extending their stays in Glasgow, Rangers’ defence isn’t getting any younger, thus adding a highly-rated 22-year-old with the ability to become a regular fixture in the side could prove to be a significant coup for Clement next season.
In other Rangers news, Jack Butland has been told to extend his Ibrox stay after a surprise official announcement.
