Norwich still in Jose Cordoba transfer race in tough Rangers update at Ibrox
Levski Sofia defender Jose Cordoba looked set for an imminent move to Rangers, but Norwich are said to be very much in the running still, according to the Pink Un.
Connor Southwell posted on X reporting that Norwich were in the race to sign the Panama international as of the morning of 29 May, despite previous reports suggesting Cordoba was all but certain to be announced at Ibrox in the coming days.
Cordoba even attended the Gers’ 4-1 win over Kilmarnock earlier this month as Philippe Clement closed in on his top defensive target.
The Levski Sofia centre-back is rated as the best defender in Bulgaria and won that very award for the 2022-23 season, and missing out on Cordoba would send Rangers back to the drawing board.
Cordoba U-turn would be costly loss for Rangers
Just this morning (29 May), reports had circled that the Gers had agreed a combined £3million fee with Levski for the transfer of Cordoba, £1.1million of which would have come in additional add-ons.
This surprise turn of events will no doubt have blindsided Clement and the Ibrox hierarchy, particularly given it seemed the club were all set to welcome Cordoba within days.
It also poses questions about the pulling power possessed by a Rangers side who surrendered both the Scottish Premiership and Cup respectively to their Old Firm rivals Celtic, compared to a Norwich side who, at present, don’t even have a head coach.
The ageing Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun were to be phased out in favour of younger, more dynamic defenders by Clement this season (despite the latter being awarded a new contract), and Cordoba was likely to play a massive part in that transformation.
But if Cordoba does end up leaving Rangers in the lurch to move to the English Championship instead, it’s a telling sign for Clement that his summer rebuild may not go as smoothly as the early signs, and signings, have suggested.
