Jack Butland sale mooted at Ibrox as Rangers look to raise funds

Jack Butland is the likeliest of Rangers’ under-contract players to be sacrificed for a fee this summer, according to the MailOnline.

John McGarry’s report [28 May] states that among a huge squad overhaul this summer at Ibrox, Butland may have to depart to raise funds with several suitors circling, including offering a return to the Premier League.

The goalkeeper has been a shining light in the Light Blues’ season, despite the team missing out to Celtic a league and cup double.

Despite over 50 appearances throughout a remarkable individual year, though, Butland missed out on Gareth Southgate’s 33-man provisional England squad for Euro 2024.

McGrath stated in the report: “The manager has made it clear he doesn’t want to lose Jack Butland at any price.

“Be that as it may, the goalkeeper remains the most likely source of cash to fund the necessary improvements.”

Will Jack Butland quit Rangers for England return?

When Butland signed for Rangers, he’ll have been hoping for a season of regular games, a crack at the Scottish title, and European experience – but from an individual perspective, he has been incredible at Ibrox.

With three years left on his contract, the Gers are in a powerful position regarding Butland, but the issue which plagues the club is how extensive the squad rebuilding mission is – especially for Clement, whose job will not last long if the team start poorly next term.

A significant cash injection would no doubt help Clement, but it’s one to weigh up for the Belgian on whether a clutch of unproven signings or Butland himself will earn Rangers more points in yet another title hunt in 2024-25.

Whether Butland’s England omission has unsettled him too much is uncertain, but it looks as if as long as he is playing north of the border, the 31-year-old will not make it double figures in England caps as long as Southgate is at the helm.
