Todd Cantwell to be sold despite what he did in Rangers defeat v Celtic at Hampden Park

Gary Keown has urged Rangers to sell Todd Cantwell this summer despite a more positive showing in the Scottish Cup final defeat to Celtic on Saturday (25 May).

A last-minute Adam Idah goal was the difference as Philippe Clement missed out on yet another title after a defeat at Hampden.

Cantwell made his third consecutive start and had a positive performance despite the Gers failing to win against their Old Firm rivals.

Despite this, Keown suggested in the Scottish Mail on Sunday (26 May, pages 98 & 99) that the Englishman should be sold.

He said: “Cantwell showed a desire to get on the ball and make things happen yesterday but he was taken off eventually and just doesn’t look forceful enough to be the main playmaker.

“He should be sold. Try as he did to change things yesterday, he remains better known for what he taps out on his phone rather than what he trots out on the pitch.”

How did Rangers perform v Celtic?

Despite the best efforts of Cantwell to create chances for his teammates, the Light Blues lacked potency in front of goal throughout.

Fabio Silva had a useful chance early on but his effort was weak and gave Joe Hart very little to do considering the quality of the opportunity.

Ridvan Yilmaz had an effort from range which was similar to the Portuguese’s as it rolled into the clutches of the keeper.

Abdallah Sima did have the ball in the net but after a Nicolas Raskin push on Hart, the goal was rightly ruled out.

The Senegalese attacker had multiple chances after this but failed to truly trouble the Celtic shot-stopper before Idah eventually scored the winner.

Rangers had the majority of the chances throughout the game but it is characteristic of their season that they would lose once again to their Old Firm rivals.

A frustrating day at Hampden, then, which could prove to be the last for many of the Gers players ahead of the summer transfer window.

In other Rangers news, the club want to sign a new striker ahead of Celtic in what would be a club-record deal.
