BBC Sport pundit baffled by what Cyriel Dessers did for Rangers in Old Firm defeat v Celtic
Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers has left James McFadden baffled with a piece of skill in the first half of the Gers’ Scottish Cup clash with Celtic.
The Light Blues extended their winless run against their Old Firm rivals with a 1-0 defeat at Hampden Park on Saturday (25 May) with Adam Idah’s late goal ensuring the Gers missed out on a domestic cup double.
While Philippe Clement’s side produced one of their more impressive derby performances in Saturday’s defeat, they still struggled to fashion any chances and BBC pundit McFadden was quick to slam Dessers for his wasteful hold-up play.
Speaking on BBC Sportscene on Saturday (25 May, 15:49) he said: “What is he trying there? He’s trying to flick that on.
“Don’t knock it inside, just hold on.”
Will Cyriel Dessers leave Rangers in the summer transfer window after Celtic clash?
For much of the season, Dessers has been a punching bag for Rangers supporters and while some pundits and fans will suggest that criticism isn’t deserved, he does always seem to make mistakes in the biggest games.
While he spurned a couple of chances at Hampden, as he has done at Ibrox and Parkhead already this term, he also proved wasteful at times with the ball at his feet as he tried to force passes that weren’t there to be completed.

For much of the campaign, the Nigerian has managed to prove his doubters wrong, but he is still yet to really crack it against Celtic. There have been signs of improvement, but the centre-forward must do more in the big games.
Hopefully, Clement will be able to strengthen at the top end of the pitch this summer to lighten the load on Dessers’ shoulders. He has played a lot of football and needs more support if Rangers want to win the Premiership.
