BBC pundit tears into ‘senseless’ Todd Cantwell for what he did in Rangers Old Firm loss v Celtic

Rangers midfielder Todd Cantwell has been torn into by Leanne Crichton for a “totally senseless” incident in the Gers’ Old Firm defeat to Celtic.

Philippe Clement’s Light Blues failed to win their first Old Firm derby of the season at Hampden Park on Saturday (25 May) as Adam Idah’s late winner ensured the Hoops won the Scottish Cup final.

Although much of the performance from the Gers was much more impressive, the Light Blues still showed their immaturity, particularly as Cantwell was booked in the second half much to the frustration of BBC Sport pundit Crichton.

Speaking on BBC Sportscene (25 May, 16:34) she said: “It’s just retaliation from Todd Cantwell. Totally senseless, your number is up, make your way off of the pitch.

“Just get on with the game. He’s taken his opportunity, he’s managed to get through 75 minutes without picking up a yellow card so he has afforded himself one as he heads off of the pitch.”

Will Rangers sell Todd Cantwell after a poor display v Celtic at Hampden Park?

Far too often Cantwell has let these sorts of matches pass him by without really having an impact and that was once again the case at Hamdpen Park on Saturday as the Englishman was almost anonymous.

While he had a couple of bright moments in possession where he drove towards the Hoops’ goal, he never managed to produce the final moment of quality to find the back of the net or even pick out a teammate in the box.

The Englishman quite clearly has plenty of talent, but he never shows it often enough. Although the likes of Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley shine for Celtic, the Gers midfield including Cantwell never seem to cause them genuine issues.

Something has to change sooner rather than later or the Rangers star will be one of the players shipped out by Clement this summer. For the money they pay the former Norwich man, they could probably find a more consistent midfielder.
