Rangers in major investment talks at Ibrox with Philippe Clement set for transfer budget boost

Rangers are talking to potential investors to help boost Philippe Clement’s transfer budget for the summer, according to Peter Martin.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer on 24 May, the former STV, talkSPORT and Sky journalist reported that Rangers are “courting” businessmen in a bid to improve the squad at Ibrox and keep themselves in line with Celtic, who now have 54 titles to the Gers’ 55.

Clement arrived at Ibrox in October 2023 and oversaw an incredible revival in the Govan club’s form. However, after missing out on the Scottish Premiership title, there is plenty of work to be done on the squad this summer with contracts expiring and key players linked with moves away.

Martin claims that the Ibrox board are busy at work trying to raise funds for the Belgian to be more competitive next season.

“I think the big key issue for Rangers is to try and work out a way to back Philippe Clement,” said Martin, as shown in a video clip on PLZ Soccer’s X account (24 May).

“I know for a fact they have people coming into Ibrox, investors. They’re trying to get investors to invest to allow them to back him and give him enough money.

“Whether these people they’ve been courting will actually jump on the bandwagon and say, ‘ok, we’ll give you the money and let the manager have a go at it’ [remains to be seen].

“The biggest signing for Rangers this summer will be people who are willing to give them substantial amounts of money to try and stay neck and neck with Celtic.”

Rangers in talks over new investment at Ibrox

John Bennett has had a mixed first year as chairman of Rangers Football Club.

He inherited quite the mess from Douglas Park. However, he was still complicit in the decision-making that led to Michael Beale’s arrival as manager and then allowed the clueless Londoner to have free reign on transfers in the summer window.

Bennett didn’t wait around to sack Beale. But we cannot give him too much credit for making a decision that was a very easy one to make.

However, the appointment of Clement is one that does deserve praise because although the Belgian failed to win the title, he did incredibly well to at least mount of a challenge and leave Celtic waiting until the last week of the season to seal top spot. If he hadn’t have worked miracles to rescue the sinking ship left by Beale, things would have been a lot worse.

Clement also has a trophy on his CV after winning the Scottish League Cup and he could win a cup double this weekend when the Gers take on Celtic at Hampden Park in the Scottish Cup final.

He needs backing though. He’s a talented manager who seems to be the best there’s been at Ibrox for a very long time.

New investment – especially this summer – would be wise.
