Rangers fail in transfer talks as Coventry City announce new signing

Philippe Clement will be feeling frustrated after it was confirmed that Rangers have missed out on the signing of Raphael Borges Rodrigues.

It looks set to be an incredibly busy summer at Ibrox.

Clement is prepared for a major overhaul of his Rangers squad, with several players already close to completing moves to the club.

However, one player who won’t be joining the Belgian in Scotland is Borges Rodrigues.

The Gers had been credited with an interest in the forward previously, with Football Scotland reporting this month (1 May) that the club were keeping an eye on the 20-year-old.

Coventry City were also linked with the Macarthur FC forward at the time, and it has now emerged that the English club have beaten their Scottish counterparts to the punch.

Coventry announced via their official website on Friday (24 May) that Borges Rodrigues has joined the club, signing a contract with the Light Blues until 2028.

Philippe Clement will be frustrated to miss out on Raphael Borges Rodrigues at Rangers

Based on what has been said about Borges Rodrigues, Clement will no doubt be frustrated that his side have missed out on the player.

Following the player’s arrival at Macarthur last year, manager Mile Sterjovski said (via A Leagues), “We are really happy to have Raphael on board this season. He’s a talented youngster with a great future.”

“He’s already broken into the A-League, he has played for the Australian youth teams and we think he has got a bright career ahead of him.

“Raphael is an exciting attacking player and I think the Bulls’ fans will enjoy watching him this season.”

Nonetheless, the chance to sign the forward has now passed, and Clement nor Rangers can afford to dwell on this missed opportunity.

The season has only just finished, and there is an entire summer ahead for Rangers to find new targets and bring them to Glasgow.

The Gers might have missed out on this player, but that should simply fuel them with the desire to go out and sign the next exciting youngster on the market.
