Rangers told to offer Ryan Jack new appearance-related contract at Ibrox as injury update emerges

Rangers have been told to offer Ryan Jack an appearance-related contract to extend his stay at Ibrox by both Barry Ferguson and Andy Walker.

The Scottish international, who has been named in Steve Clarke’s side for the Euros, has missed the majority of the second half of the season through injury with his last appearance coming in March.

Jack’s contract at Ibrox expires at the end of the season and while it remains unclear if he will pen new terms, Ferguson and Sky Sports pundit Grant have mooted the possibility of a performance-related deal.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (23 May, 34:30) Ferguson said: “I’m 50/50 on it, I like him quality-wise, the only thing is, is he going to be fit and available?”

Walker responded: “You can always build it into the contract, that if you’re fit and you play a certain number of games you go to the next level.

“That’s assuming that everybody is open, honest and upfront.”

Ferguson replied: “That’s a good way of putting it if you’ve suffered injuries over the last couple of seasons. It’s a lower salary and a higher appearance fee depending on whether you’re fit and available.

“That tends to happen when you get into your thirties.”

Will Rangers and Philippe Clement offer Ryan Jack a new contract at Ibrox?

When he has been fit and available for selection, Jack has been a regular under Philippe Clement in Glasgow and for the early stages of the Belgian’s tenure, he was one of the first names on the teamsheet.

However, the Light Blues have had far too many problems with injuries this season to keep a player on their books if they are going to miss the majority of the season, especially as Clement looks to put his own stamp on the squad.

If some sort of performance-related contract can be agreed upon, it may well be a no-brainer for all parties, unless Jack feels he can get a better deal somewhere else in the Premiership or even in the English pyramid.

With both Borna Barisic and John Lundstram set to leave Ibrox this summer, the Gers cannot afford to lose all the experience in their changing room. If Jack was to depart as well Clement’s side would begin to look rather inexperienced.
