Sam Lammers could be set for second chance at Rangers after loan exit

Sam Lammers has been in sublime form on loan at FC Utrecht, and Craig Moore thinks this could earn him a second chance at Rangers this summer.

The striker scored twice in 31 appearances for Rangers in the first half of this season, but on Go Radio’s football show, Moore referenced Ally McCoist’s first spell at the club to say that Lammers can still turn his Ibrox career around.

Lammers was loaned to the Eredivisie club in January and has netted 10 goals in just 18 appearances, calling into question if Rangers should sell him permanently to Utrecht this summer.

In quotes reported by Rangers Review, Moore said: “Sometimes it doesn’t work out immediately, I don’t think it worked out for Ally McCoist in the earlier period. Super, everyone loves him and he was incredible.

“Business is business and it might be something that Rangers snap up. But you can also have a look at him at pre-season.

“I don’t think he played his proper position, a 10 at Rangers. He’s been playing as an out-and-out-striker at Utrecht.”

Is Lammers the answer to Rangers’ striker problem?

Rangers have utilised a plethora of strikers this season, with poor form, injuries and high-profile misses characterising their lack of potency up front.

Cyriel Dessers has been Philippe Clement’s go-to-choice for much of the season, scoring 22 times in 53 appearances, but he’s also come under fire for missing big opportunities in front of goal.

Danilo was a big-money signing alongside Lammers in the summer of 2023, but after a bright start, he fractured his skull in late September and has been absent since as he continues his recovery.

Kemar Roofe has given Gers fans some exceptional memories during his four-year spell at the club but will leave on a free transfer this summer having made next to no impact this season.

That leaves Lammers as a player who has significant question marks over his future this summer, leaving Rangers in somewhat of a catch-22.

If Clement keeps faith in the Dutchman and plays him up front as the main centre-forward, will Lammers replicate his goal return for Utrecht immediately upon his return to Ibrox, or is it better to take the money from the Dutch side?

A parting of the ways seems likely, but if Clement is aligned with the thinking of Moore, he could save the Gers a large fee on a player like Lawrence Shankland, by instead making Lammers the focal point of a new-look Rangers attack next season.

In other Rangers news, the club are likely to lock horns with Celtic over the signing of a highly-rated left-back in the summer transfer window.
