Todd Cantwell behind-the-scenes issue mooted at Rangers

Derek Ferguson suggested something might be happening with Todd Cantwell behind the scenes at Rangers.

The attacking midfielder scored in each of the Gers’ final two matches of the Scottish Premiership season, the 5-2 win over Dundee and the 3-3 draw with Hearts.

However, Cantwell was not used at all in the 2-1 defeat by Celtic in the Old Firm derby on 11 May, something that led Peter Martin to suggest there might be an issue between the player and boss Philippe Clement (PLZ Soccer, 14 May).

Cantwell also received some negativity for posting a picture of his celebration against Hearts despite the fact Rangers failed to win.

Ferguson – speaking exclusively to Ibrox News – thinks players should stay off social media and pondered whether something is amiss with Cantwell.

He said: “I genuinely don’t know (if there’s a problem), because Todd Cantwell can be – I’ve watched him in games and thought ‘wow, he’s a player by the way’.

“And then sometimes I don’t know if there’s something going on behind the scenes, his private life maybe he’s on social media too much, there’s a lot made of that sometimes.

“He’s hot and cold and you kind of wonder why because he was a player as a youngster that for whatever reason never kicked on, there must be a reason.

“Maybe it’s the mental state I’m in watching my team at the moment but then you start to look at other stuff, start to question other stuff, I’m just of the opinion if you’re at a football club that’s all you focus on.

“All the other stuff I don’t know why they get involved, wait until you’re 35 or over then you can slaughter who you want. You should stop these guys going on social media, it causes mayhem.”

Does Todd Cantwell have a Rangers future?

On his day, Cantwell is a real creative spark and a dangerous player for Rangers.

But at times he can appear lost and disinterested, which is a cause of huge frustration to the Gers faithful and no doubt to Clement too.

Todd Cantwell is linked with a Rangers exit.

It’s a tricky one with Cantwell because he definitely has something to offer but Clement needs to breed a real culture of winning the important games.

Not everyone in the squad has proven capable of that at Ibrox, so Cantwell still has a lot to prove to show he should be part of this team moving forward.
