Rangers told where to focus recruitment as Connor Barron transfer prediction made

Derek Ferguson has predicted that Connor Barron will not join Rangers this summer but says the club should be targeting Scottish talent in academies due to the resale potential.

Aberdeen midfielder Barron, 21, has been linked with a move to Ibrox with Football League World reporting (13 May) suggesting that he is a target for the Gers as he is yet to agree a new contract at Pittodrie.

With Old Firm rivals Celtic and Swansea City also having been linked with Barron’s signature there could be quite hot competition for the midfielder.

Ferguson believes the rivalry with Aberdeen means Barron would be unlikely to make the switch to Ibrox but thinks the Light Blues should be looking at youngsters in other academies to sign, improve and sell on.

Speaking to Ibrox News, he said: “There’s a few good, young Scottish boys. There’s Lennon Miller who’s at Motherwell, there’s a few, and you should be targeting them.

“You see if you miss them in terms of bringing them into your academy and bringing them on then you should maybe be looking at some of these other academies that are blooding these young boys.

“Lennon Miller is only 17 – you talk about Barron, I don’t think Barron would come anyway there’s that obvious dislike between Aberdeen and Rangers.

“But you look at these guys and you think you’ve got the tools you could work with, you could bring them on.

“We need the very best young Scottish players – I’m talking under 20 – bring them to the club, make them better and obviously if you get that sell on value that’s great but if you can get two or three years out of them then, my God, that’s the difference it makes because these are young guys that are hungry.”

Will Rangers sign Aberdeen gem Connor Barron?

Barron made 29 appearances for the Dons this season and the Scotland Under-21 international has plenty of suitors for his signature.

Rangers are certainly in need of a squad overhaul after finishing the season eight points back of Celtic despite having led the way only a couple of months back.

Connor Barron

At 21, Barron suits the age and profile of player Rangers should be targeting for Philippe Clement and given he is out of contract, there would only be training compensation to pay.

The hope is Rangers can get their house in order nice and early in the window, ship out players who Clement no longer wants and bring in talent he wants to work with.
