Philippe Clement to utilise contacts book in new Rangers transfer push
Philippe Clement will need a “wee favour” from his contacts book as Rangers are in need of a total squad rebuild, Derek Ferguson has said.
The Gers saw their title ambitions fall away in the closing weeks of the season, winning just four of their final 10 Scottish Premiership games to finish a disappointing eight points adrift of Celtic.
That was even though at one stage of the campaign Rangers led the way ahead of their Old Firm rivals, who they face in the final of the Scottish Cup on Saturday (25 May) to try and finish a campaign that has fizzled out somewhat on a bright note.
Former Rangers man Ferguson was asked by Ibrox News if central defence is a particular area of focus for the club this summer given Connor Goldson has been linked with a move away and Leon Balogun’s advancing years.
But he thinks it goes much further than just a need to improve defensively.
“I’m concerned about the whole squad overall,” he said.
“It is a total rebuild, we’re just hoping that the connection that Clement might have, managers or coaches that he’s got a relationship with might be able to do us a wee favour here and there.
“We talk about mentality, I don’t think we’re good enough the current squad is not good enough. Souttar of course, there’s something about big Souttar I like but we cannot have overall changes but it looks like it’s going to have to happen.”
Rangers must back Philippe Clement in summer transfer window
Rangers were in an absolute mess that Michael Beale had left when Clement was appointed at Ibrox way back in October last year.
The fact he made a real fist of the title fight is credit to him but the same familiar flaws that were there prior to their resurgence resurfaced late in the campaign.

Clement has shown he has the qualities to get this team going but he needs some help from the board now to put together a squad capable of staying the course in a title fight.
It is time to move on some of the old guard who have failed to consistently get the job done and give some fresher, younger blood a chance to flourish.
