Celtic urged to bury Rangers by Chris Sutton live from Parkhead on Sky Sports

Chris Sutton believes Celtic have a great opportunity to “bury Rangers” after winning the Scottish Premiership title this season.

Rangers were pipped to the league crown for a third consecutive season since their title triumph in 2020/21, finishing second, eight points adrift of the champions.

And Sutton feels the Bhoys can kick on and establish an era of dominance from here.

Speaking to Sky Sports at Parkhead (18 May), he said: “It’s a great opportunity [for Celtic] to really bury Rangers, winning the league and all the financial aspects that come with that.

“Celtic fans will be looking at it and thinking, ‘Blimey, this year was too close for comfort, let’s really kick on and leave them in our wake.'”

Can Rangers put an end to Celtic’s Scottish Premiership dominance?

Rangers may have finished eight points behind Celtic in the league this season, but that is not an accurate reflection of how close the Scottish Premiership title race was.

The Gers had the title in their own hands until a run of poor form in the final two months of the campaign handed Celtic the initiative.

Rangers had been just a point behind Celtic with a game in hand before the Old Firm derby at Ibrox on 7 April but could only draw 3-3 before subsequently suffering a shock 3-2 defeat at Ross County and then drawing their game in hand 0-0 at Dundee.

There was still hope despite that blip before the Old Firm clash at Parkhead on 11 May, but a 2-1 defeat for the Gers all but sealed their fate and their 3-3 draw with Hearts on the final day of the season smacked of a team with nothing to play for.

Under Philippe Clement, Rangers have generally enjoyed a strong campaign, winning the Scottish League Cup and with the Scottish FA Cup final still to come. If they can build on their experiences next season, they may just be able to close the gap.
