Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes to Rangers claim issued by BBC pundit
Mark Wilson believes that Kilmarnock manager Derek McInnes could be open to taking over at Rangers at some stage in the future.
The Scotsman has turned down the Ibrox job in the past as he did not want it at that time, but the door may open in the future.
Currently, Philippe Clement is in charge at the helm and will be the manager going into the 2024/25 campaign.
Wilson, a BBC pundit, told Clyde One Superscoreboard, as quoted by the Daily Record on 16 May:
“Derek McInnes’ stock is rising and he’s a very good manager. A top manager. Killie fans will not want to hear it but I don’t think he’ll be at Killie for the rest of his career, of course. I think he will go on to bigger and better things., whether that’s the national team or down south for another crack at that.
“He’s already turned down the Rangers job, remember, when Rangers fans thought it was a shoo in he would get it and we thought it might have been agreed. Apparently he didn’t want to take it at that time.
“Would he want it again in the future? Maybe. Would Rangers fans thank him for that? There’s a train of thought that some Rangers and Celtic fans think: ‘If you turn the job down that’s your big chance gone.’ I don’t know if everyone would agree with that.”
Derek McInnes could do a decent job at Rangers
McInnes, as Wilson rightly pointed out, is an up-and-comer whose stock seems to be rising.
He won the Scottish Premiership Manager of the Month in October 2023 and has done a good job this season.
The 52-year-old has shown his ability to build a team and achieve success, as evidenced by his promotion and subsequent top-four finish with Kilmarnock.
His experience in Scottish football, particularly in the SPFL, brings stability and a winning mentality.
However, Gers must carefully weigh the potential benefits of bringing in McInnes against the risks.
His previous rejection of the Rangers job could be a point of contention among fans, who might question his commitment to the club.
Additionally, his success with Kilmarnock might not directly translate to success at a club with higher expectations and pressure like the Ibrox outfit.

In the event that Gers and Clement part ways at some stage in the future, there’s always a chance that they could turn to someone like McInnes.
In other Gers news, a first-team player may be told to empty out his Ibrox locker soon as a ‘Major Development’ has emerged behind the scenes.
