Graeme Souness makes new Rangers admission as Celtic win Scottish Premiership title race

Rangers legend Graeme Souness has admitted he was “mugged off” by Celtic fan Rod Stewart following their bet over the Scottish Premiership.

Brendan Rodgers’ Hoops pipped Philippe Clement’s Light Blues to the league title with a game to spare following their 5-0 thrashing of Kilmarnock on Wednesday (15 May) at Rugby Park.

Souness had entered a £10,000 bet with Stewart, with the Ibrox icon backing Clement’s Gers to finish top the top of the table, but following Celtic’s win, the Scotsman insists he shouldn’t have taken the gamble.

Writing for the Daily Mail (17 May) he said: “A very, very bad week for me this week, given that I’m not a gambler.

“I was mugged off to have a bet with the obsessive Celtic fan, and an old acquaintance of mine, Rod Stewart on who would win the Scottish Premiership and ended up writing him a cheque for £10,000 last Tuesday, after watching my old club Rangers lose the Old Firm derby last Saturday.

“I should have stuck to my instincts and not accepted that bet!”

Will Rangers and Philippe Clement bounce back to beat Celtic at Hampden?

This title race has ebbed and flowed throughout the season. When Michael Beale left Ibrox and was replaced by Clement, the Gers appeared to be completely out of the fight.

But an excellent run of form under the Belgian partnered with a major wobble on the green half of Glasgow ensured that the Light Blues could force their way back into the battle and even lead the race at the start of 2024.

For whatever reason, Rangers have completely fallen away over the course of the last few weeks and it is clear that major changes are required at Ibrox to close the gap to their Glasgow rivals.

Clement is expected to give his squad a major facelift when the transfer window opens this summer and while it remains to be seen just how much money he will have to spend, Souness and the rest of the Gers fanbase will hope they bounce back at Hampden first.
