Leon King shares training admission over ‘amazing’ Rangers teammate Dujon Sterling

Leon King hailed “amazing” Rangers teammate Dujon Sterling and said he loves training with the versatile ace.

Sterling struggled to break into the team initially after arriving at Ibrox on a free transfer under former Michael Beale last summer.

But the 24-year-old has proven a hugely valuable asset for Philippe Clement, featuring 23 times in the Scottish Premiership, largely as a midfielder but also on the flanks and at full-back.

King, 20, has found game time difficult to come by too, though he made his first league start of the campaign in the 5-2 beating of Dundee on Tuesday (14 May), and he is taking inspiration from Sterling.

Speaking to the Daily Record (16 May), King said: “He has been amazing all season. I think if he was put in goals he would do well there as well!

“He has been great and I have loved training with Duj. I don’t really think in modern day football you are stuck to one position as such.

“I think you need to be able to play in more than one position, it gives you a better chance as well. If the manager wants me to play anywhere else I will play there.”

Leon King hails versatile Rangers ace Dujon Sterling

There was no an immediate affinity from Rangers supporters towards Sterling, who was part of the recruitment drive of former boss Beale that did not produce a great deal of successes.

Signed originally as a full-back to provide competition to James Tavernier, Sterling has found success under Clement, though, with some impressive performances in the centre of midfield.

What has really helped Sterling’s cause is his versatility, though. He has filled in at right-back and left-back, as well as filling in in the forward areas when needed.

King has clearly been impressed by Sterling’s abilities in training and his willingness to fill holes in the team is a good influence for his teammates.

The 20-year-old defender might view Sterling’s story as an inspiration for his own hopes of featuring more regularly under Clement, who has been tipped to leave on loan this summer despite his start against Dundee, which was his first league start of the campaign.
