Daily Record baffle overseas journalist amid Rangers advanced talks for new signing

Panamanian journalist Álvaro Martínez has been left confused as reports from Scotland suggest Rangers want Jose Cordoba despite him hearing nothing regarding a move.

The Daily Record reported (9 May) that the 22-year-old was in attendance at Ibrox in the 4-1 over Kilmarnock with the Gers in advanced talks to sign him from Levski Sofia.

Philippe Clement’s side appear to have their sights set on the defender after giving him “the VIP treatment” in Glasgow.

Now speaking on El Desmarque, via COS Panama on X, Martinez has been left baffled by rumours the coming out of Scotland.

He said: “I tried to look for information from people close to José Córdoba and they didn’t confirm anything, but why is there so much information in many media outlets in Scotland? What is happening? Is it that everything is already [done]?

“The truth is it’s strange but the information doesn’t come from here it’s from Scotland.

“I think it is a step up, a step not so big but it seems to me that Scotland has a better level than Bulgaria or not so much. It’s not a small step.”

Should Rangers sign Jose Cordoba?

There is plenty of potential change afoot in the defensive line at Ibrox over the summer transfer window.

This could see Connor Goldson and Ben Davies depart for a fee while Leon Balogun is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Given that Rangers are allowing him into the stadium ahead of the window, it is clear that they want to entice him into a move.

The centre-back has risen through the ranks at Levski Sofia after making the move from Celta Vigo, who he joined in 2020.

Cordoba has just 12 months remaining on his contract in Bulgaria which has sparked interest from Clement as he looks to make his first summer signing.

Rangers have to look for alternative leagues to scout players from and given that he is just 22 years old, he could prove to be a clever piece of business.

Given that the Panama press isn’t convinced by the move, there may be cause for concern for the Light Blues ahead of the summer.

In other Rangers news, one Ibrox star has confirmed he will leave the club after the 5-2 win over Dundee.
