Todd Cantwell berated by Tom English after what he was seen doing in Rangers v Dundee

Tom English labelled Todd Cantwell a “whingey” player after his performance in the first half of the Rangers versus Dundee match.

The Gers were jeered off the pitch as they went into half-time 2-1 behind in Tuesday’s (14 May) Scottish Premiership clash at Ibrox.

Ross McCausland pulled a goal back for the hosts after they went two down, but no player covered themselves in glory.

BBC Scotland’s chief sports writer, who was in attendance at Ibrox, took aim at Cantwell and Fabio Silva in particular at the interval.

“Rangers have been physically weak, whingey (Fabio Silva and Todd Cantwell), frail at the back and are getting dog’s abuse from their fans,” he said on the BBC’s live match blog [14 May, 8:26pm].

Todd Cantwell struggling for Rangers

Cantwell was not used at all in last weekend’s defeat to Celtic – a telling message – despite Philippe Clement making five changes as the Gers chased a goal.

The Englishman was recalled against Dundee and initially struggled to get going, but he played his part in the comeback in the second half as a reminder of what he can do.

Clement does not appear to trust the versatile attacker, though, and that does not bode well for Cantwell’s future at Ibrox.

Rangers
Todd Cantwell’s time at Rangers could well be up this summer.

That is not to say there are any plans to sell him, but you would expect Clement is pushing to bring in a like-for-like replacement in the summer.

Cantwell, and indeed Silva, are both incredibly frustrating players to watch when things are not going well, but the former of particular is still capable of making something happen.

The 26-year-old has showed what a talented player he is on his day, and hopefully he can now regain his confidence heading into the final two games of the season.

In other Rangers news, a journalist has urged a player linked with the Ibrox exit to stay in place this summer.
