Todd Cantwell ripped apart after gesture he did at Ibrox in Rangers win v Dundee

Rangers man Todd Cantwell has been criticised for a gesture during his excellent display in their 5-2 win over Dundee at Ibrox, by BBC Scotland’s Tom English.

Whilst Rangers were trailing at home during the first half to much ire from the Ibrox crowd, English branded Cantwell and Fabio Silva as ‘brats’ for appearing to gesticulate that the team around them was poor.

Cantwell went on to deliver a man-of-the-match performance to steer Rangers to a 5-2 win, which keeps their flicker of Scottish Premiership title hopes alive, contributing a goal – the winner – and an assist.

English commented whilst the Light Blues were 2-1 down at half-time: “Rangers have been dreadful. Dundee have been excellent. Real confidence, real organisation, brilliant attitude. They’ve come here not afraid of Rangers.

“I’m watching Silva closely. There’s not a lot to watch. After the first goal, he started gesticulating as if “we’re so rubbish”.

“He’s a brat. Cantwell is a brat. There’s too many of that type of player in this team and I think Clement is wise to it.”

Todd Cantwell at a Rangers crossroads

Midfield man Cantwell showed against Dundee that he is capable of superb displays north of the border.

A player who demonstrated his talent – albeit inconsistently – in the Premier League was always going to be considered a coup when he arrived at Ibrox in January 2023, but now supporters and pundits are convinced the former Norwich City man does not see eye to eye with boss Philippe Clement.

At 26, the next deal for Cantwell is paramount to get right. Not even brought onto the park during the Old Firm defeat by Celtic, he would have been playing with an added bite to his game – and it’s a surprise in some respects that the controversial gesture in question wasn’t a celebration in front of Clement after swinging Rangers 3-2 in front.

Rangers
Todd Cantwell’s time at Rangers could well be up this summer.

After he was hooked off in the first half of the team’s Europa League tie with Aris, Cantwell reacted well and admitted moments like that can smooth over a player’s ego – but in his case, the midfielder tends to base his game around that bullish confidence and it’s tricky to see how a long-term future is possible at Ibrox.
