Todd Cantwell issue raised at Rangers after Philippe Clement development last week

Peter Martin has questioned the relationship at Rangers between Philippe Clement and Todd Cantwell, stating something “might be amiss”.

Speaking on PLZ Soccer’s The Football Show [14 May], Martin raised the point that Cantwell and Clement may not see eye to eye amid previous speculation regarding the duo, with the former Norwich City man left among the substitutes to play no part in last week’s Old Firm defeat at Celtic.

Cantwell returned to the side in Tuesday’s (14 May) match at Ibrox against Dundee – a game in which he impressed in the second period – but questions remain over his long-term future in the side.

Martin stated: “I wonder if there’s a story developing with Todd Cantwell? If you can’t get on the park in that game, even as a substitute, there’s something amiss.”

Cantwell is under contract at Ibrox until the summer of 2026.

Will Todd Cantwell stay at Rangers this summer?

It remains to be seen where Cantwell’s future lies, having now been in Scotland for 18 months.

The move came when the midfielder’s career in English football was at a crossroads, and represented a new chapter in which he already has silverware under his belt, alongside the opportunity to play European football – as is often the appeal for English players moving north of the border.

It has been touted that Clement could require up to 12 major new signings in order to look to topple Celtic next term, with wholesale changes in the squad mooted.

Rangers
Todd Cantwell’s time at Rangers could well be up this summer.

With speculation around several Rangers players’ futures, Cantwell may be considered surplus to requirements under Clement having only completed 90 minutes three times since Christmas, although he did show in the Dundee match what he is capable of.

At 26 and his next contract being the one that could define his career, it could be time for pastures new for the creative midfield maestro.

In other Rangers news, Jack Butland has been urged to stay at Ibrox amid transfer rumours.
