Chris Sutton makes ominous Rangers dig at Kris Boyd on Sky Sports

Chris Sutton has insisted that Rangers’ Scottish Premiership title record could soon be equalled by Celtic, who joked to Kris Boyd that the Gers should “give it a year” on Sky Sports.

Speaking before the Gers’ 5-2 win over Dundee at Ibrox, Sutton and Boyd went back and forth on Rangers’ potential to be regular league winners once again.

Philippe Clement’s side are three points behind Celtic with just two games left of the Premiership season, although the Hoops only need a draw to lift the title again.

Boyd addressed the Gers’ current situation on Sky Sports, saying: “This club’s built on winning league championships, it is, and you’re going to have to get back to that.”

“Not in recent times”, chimed in Sutton, reminding Boyd that Celtic have won 11 of the last 12 Premiership titles.

Boyd replied again: “But it has, we’ve still won the most.”

That appeared to be the end of the discussion until Sutton quietly retorted with; “Give it a year.”

Rangers at risk of surrendering title record to Celtic

Rangers’ 55 domestic titles once stood out as by far the greatest number of league championships claimed by a single club.

However, the Gers’ financial problems and demotion to the fourth tier of Scottish football in 2012 have given Celtic the chance to catch up, and they’ve done just that.

By winning the league in 11 of the past 12 seasons, only missing out to Steven Gerrard’s side in 2020-21, Celtic are hot on Rangers’ heels, and if they are successful in retaining the Premiership this season, they’ll achieve their 54th title, just one behind the Gers.

Sutton’s jibe is therefore an ominous one for Boyd and every other Rangers fan, knowing that in 12 months, their record could be wiped out by their biggest rivals if Celtic pip them to the Premiership title once again in 2024-25.

With a huge summer rebuild on Clement’s hands, he will know that the pressure could be greater than ever before, as the Ibrox faithful urge them to seize the initiative and keep their noses in front of Celtic with league title number 56 next season.

In other Rangers news, one BBC pundit claimed Sir Alex Ferguson would tear his hair out watching this Ibrox star against Dundee.
