Kris Boyd and Chris Sutton clash after what was said about Celtic and Rangers stars on Sky Sports
Chris Sutton and Kris Boyd clashed again on Sky Sports after a discussion regarding Cyriel Dessers’ future at Rangers.
The Nigeria international hit his 22nd goal of the season as Philippe Clement’s side were forced to come from 2-0 down to beat Dundee at Ibrox (14 May), but pre-game there was a discussion about his future at the club ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer for the club.
Sutton told Sky Sports (14 May, 18:51) that he doesn’t believe Dessers is good enough to be the number one striker at the club despite his goal tally, as he isn’t prolific enough.
“Do I think Rangers need an upgrade in that centre forward position, I do,” he said. “He speaks well, he’s a likeable character.
“There’s barely a Rangers player in truth who would get into the Celtic team, but I like his attitude, he does graft, but if Rangers want to go to the next level they need a really prolific striker who takes their opportunities.
“They had Kris [Boyd] back in the day, they’ve had great strikers. Cyriel Dessers with the greatest respect, isn’t one of them.”
That led to Boyd jumping in to defend Dessers while taking a cheeky dig at Celtic’s Kyogo.
“To be fair though, he’s scored more goals than the Celtic number nine,” he said, which led to Sutton firing back.
“Come on, are you comparing him to Kyogo? Come on,” he said, while Boyd repeated that he had scored more goals several times. Sutton then asked who Boyd would take as the Rangers striker if he had the choice between the two, and Boyd refused to answer.
“I’m just saying he’s scored more goals. He’s scored more goals,” he said, before swiftly moving the conversation on.

Rangers need more than Dessers but he has a role to play
When Dessers joined the club last summer he was one of a many who was signed to add goals to the team, and he has outperformed all the others.
Sam Lammers has left and likely won’t return, Danilo has spent more time on the sidelines injured than on the pitch and Abdallah Sima has delivered when necessary too.
But the problem Dessers has got is that he misses an abundance of chances too, which makes you wonder how many goals a reliable goalscorer like Lawrence Shankland would have in this team, and what difference that could make to the league table.
However, to say Dessers should leave is a step too far because he has proven that he can find the net and he has his uses to the way Clement wants to set the team up.
As Boyd points out, he can’t be that bad if he’s outscoring the league-winning number nine too, so both of these pundits are correct and Rangers shouldn’t be pushing too hard to get him out of the door this summer.
In other Rangers news, one BBC pundit claimed Sir Alex Ferguson would tear his hair out watching this Ibrox star vs Dundee.
