Rangers now want to sign Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron ahead of Celtic this summer

Rangers are interested in a move to sign Aberdeen midfielder Connor Barron this summer, according to Football League World.

The outlet reported via their website on 13 May that the Light Blues are eyeing up a deal to bring in the 21-year-old who is currently set to depart from Pittodrie after so far failing to agree a new contract with the Dons.

He will therefore cost only minimal training compensation, but Rangers face competition for his signature from Old Firm rivals Celtic and Swansea City, with the Welsh side having had a January bid rejected.

Interest in the Scottish youngster has also been reported from Italy where Cagliari are believed to be after him.

Can Philippe Clement get Rangers midfield help from SPFL rival?

Barron has been cited as an obvious target for the recruitment department at Ibrox this season as he has established himself as an important player for a struggling Aberdeen side.

That the Scottish Premiership side have still not secured his long-term future has come as a surprise to some, and it looks like Philippe Clement is now seeking to take advantage.

The weekend Old Firm derby defeat, in which the exit-bound John Lundstram had a nightmare outing and midfield partner Mohamed Diomande struggled, has surely sparked an increase in focus on strengthening that area of the squad.

Ryan Jack is expected to depart this summer when his contract expires as well, so more than one new addition in the centre of the park would be no surprise.

Barron looks set to be an affordable option who still has room to improve, and if Celtic are also after him it appears all the more reason to do a deal when it was the midfield battle that decided the latest meeting between the two Glasgow sides as it is.

But whether Rangers and Celtic have both left it too late and could now be overtaken by interest from down south or overseas remains to be seen, with the Dons man surely going down as a missed opportunity if he heads elsewhere when Clement has now made clear that major change is underway in the upcoming transfer window.

In other Rangers news, the Light Blues also want to bring in a sought-after Premier League ace who is on the move.
