Philippe Clement shares what John Lundstram did ‘immediately’ after Rangers Old Firm loss v Celtic
Rangers manager Philippe Clement has revealed what John Lundstram did “immediately” after his red card in the Old Firm defeat to Celtic.
The Light Blues’ feint title hopes were all but ended with a 2-1 defeat to the Hoops at Parkhead on Saturday (11 May) with Lundstram the centre of attention as he scored an own-goal and was sent off in the first half.
Some pundits and supporters have been quick to suggest the Englishman should never play for the Gers again and while Clement admitted he had a bad game, he admitted the midfielder immediately apologised.
As quoted by Four Lads Had A Dream on X (13 May) Clement said: “John spoke & apologised to me immediately. He knew.”
Will John Lundstram ever play for Philippe Clement or Rangers again?
There’s no escaping the fact Lundstram had a terrible game against Celtic on Saturday. The midfielder never looked comfortable in the clash and his tackle was nothing short of stupid and not what should be expected of a senior professional.
The frustration that has since emerged from fans and pundits has been growing for some time at Ibrox. There has been a general feeling that the midfielder has let his standards slip as he nears the end of his deal.
Whether that is right or wrong, it is clear Lundstram is not at his best and with it becoming more and more likely he will leave Ibrox this summer and head to Trabzonspor, it could be best for everyone if he’s taken out of the firing line.
At times this season, he has shown that he is capable of being an incredibly effective player in the Scottish game, but his displays in recent weeks haven’t been at the standard required to start for Rangers regularly.
His apology shows that he cares and knows that he let his teammates down, but that doesn’t make up for his mistake.
