Robbie Savage ‘can’t believe’ reaction to Rangers incident v Celtic, Chris Sutton agrees
Robbie Savage and Chris Sutton have criticised John Lundstram for his “stonewall” red-card challenge in Rangers’ costly Old Firm defeat by Celtic.
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live in a post on X [11 May] following the derby, Savage and Sutton doubted how some were denying Lundstram’s tackle on Alistair Johnston was a sending-off offence, as Rangers endured the entire second half with 10 men and already trailing at Celtic Park.
Lundstram is now considered to have played his final game for Rangers, with his contract expiring in the summer and manager Philippe Clement expected to move him on.
“I can’t believe it’s even a debate,” roared Savage.
“Own goal, and then a straight red card, and it’s stonewall.”
Sutton added: “The game was done then. Celtic were the better team and have got the better players, but if I’m a Rangers fan, I’m furious with John Lundstram. It’s like he didn’t want to be out there.”
The ‘debate’ over John Lundstram’s red card v Celtic
While most are in agreement over Lundstram’s dismissal – particularly after seeing the still shots and various replays of the incident as referee Willie Collum examined the VAR monitor – some have an alternative view.
Kenny Miller was the most high-profile of these, having claimed the initial call from Collum of a yellow card for Lundstram was sufficient.
Ex-Rangers and Celtic man Miller then doubled down on his verdict after the match, with the view that many players could be getting sent off for attempting to play the ball high upfield.

Michael Stewart disagreed with Miller, branding the tackle a definite red card and citing the “force” used by Lundstram in challenging Johnston.
The incident could have spelt a sour end for the midfielder as he now serves a suspension for the final two matches of the Scottish Premiership season – as well as the Scottish Cup final against Celtic on May 25.
