Chris Sutton has sympathy for Rangers and Celtic as ‘ridiculous’ transfer verdict given

Chris Sutton has shared sympathy for Rangers and Celtic given the competition they face from the Premier League when signing players in the transfer window.

With the end of the season on the horizon, the summer transfer market is nearly open for business and Philippe Clement will look to put his mark on his squad.

Last summer, the Gers made just four paid permanent signings which saw Cyriel Dessers, Danilo, Jose Cifuentes and Sam Lammers come in.

Just Dessers has managed to make a positive impact but speaking on 606 Football Phone In (11 May, 57:35), Sutton has shown sympathy for the Light Blues.

He said: “Celtic and Rangers, they have to buy development players. Just look down south at the ridiculous money which is being spent on bang-average players. That’s where I do have massive sympathy for Celtic and Rangers.”

Where do Rangers need to strengthen in the transfer window?

There have been some standout performers for Rangers so far this season who must be kept hold of by Clement over pre-season.

Jack Butland has been superb and amidst interest from the Premier League, Rangers will be keen to keep hold of him.

There looks to be plenty of exits on the cards with James Tavernier and Connor Goldson linked to Saudi Arabia. This is while John Lundstram and Borna Barisic look set for Turkey.

With that being said, Rangers are going to have to move quickly in the market to bring in replacements for those who depart.

There will also be loan deals which end such as Fabio Silva, Abdallah Sima and Mohammed Diomande. They too will need replacing.

Fabio Silva joined Rangers on loan from Wolves in January.

It won’t be a case of strengthening the squad ready for a title charge for Clement it will be a window of squad building for the future.

Plenty of free and cheaper signings are likely to come through the doors at Ibrox.
