Graham Spiers blasts Kenny Miller for what he said as Rangers lose 2-1 v Celtic
Graham Spiers has blasted Kenny Miller as “living in the 1980s” after what he said about John Lundstram’s red card in Celtic’s 2-1 win over Rangers.
The Hoops all but sealed the SPFL title once again thanks to goals from Matt O’Riley and a Lundstram own goal, with Cyriel Dessers pulling one back before Lundstram was shown a straight red card for a lunge on Alistair Johnston.
Miller was adamant that the 30-year-old midfielder shouldn’t have seen red despite the tackle being labelled as “dangerous”, and journalist Spiers responded on his personal X account (11 May) to anyone who felt the same way.
“That is absolutely a red card – all day long,” he wrote.
“In the modern game, if you think John Lundstram should have stayed on the pitch, you’re living in the 1980s.
“Studs up, lunging at speed, potential ankle-breaker. No argument.”
Stonewall penalty in today’s game, Lundstram killed Rangers
Even the most bias Rangers fan would find it hard to argue that Lundstram shouldn’t have seen a red card against Celtic, which makes Miller’s stance even more odd.
Yes Johnston planted his foot in front of Lundstram, but that is his prerogative as the man in possession and Lundstram should know better than to go flying into a tackle in that way.
It’s a stonewall penalty, especially in today’s game, and he will have known that too considering his experience.
The team was already losing at that point, however it can’t be ignored that momentum was in their favour because of Dessers scoring just 90 seconds after Celtic had managed to make it 2-0.
Ultimately that is what killed Rangers’ chances in the game and cost them the title, and it was brainless. Spiers is spot on, this was all on him.
