Alan Brazil shares one-word Ally McCoist admission over Rangers, Celtic this season

Alan Brazil says he agrees with Ally McCoist in his assessment that both Rangers and Celtic have been “average sides” this season.

The two teams meet in a critical Old Firm showdown on Saturday lunchtime, with Rangers in need of a win as they look to close the three-point gap to their bitter rivals across Glasgow.

Speaking on talkSPORT on 10 May at 09:22, Brazil reflected back on McCoist’s view: “Ally said to me a while back these are two average sides this year. He’s probably not incorrect.”

Last time Rangers lifted the Scottish trophy in 2021, Steven Gerrard guided the team to an unbeaten, 102-point haul as opposed to the maximum of 90 the Gers can reach this time around.

Celtic can only reach 93 should they win their final three games to retain the title.

Rangers ready to regroup for next season

Regardless of how this season does end, Philippe Clement and the Rangers recruitment staff are evidently laying foundations for a long-term plan.

This would include a major squad overhaul this summer as a succession of good club servants are shown the door in favour of vibrant players to take the club back to dominance of Scotland.

To say Rangers would be looking to improve in Europe would be facetious given their achievements in recent years in continental competition, but to be able to sustain that over a number of years would show immense progress overall.

It is important when reshuffling the pack, however, that Clement doesn’t change too much too soon. Keeping hold of Jack Butland and James Tavernier should be the ultimate priority.

Afterwards, another effective attacking option should be brought to Ibrox to contribute more goals and even turn defeats into draws – so far the difference between the two sides at the summit.

In other Rangers news, James McFadden says Clement’s side cannot afford to make this mistake on Saturday.
