Rangers want to sign Levski Sofia defender Jose Cordoba this summer
Rangers want to sign Panama international Jose Cordoba this summer to bolster their defence, according to El Marcador TV.
Speaking on their official X account (8 May), the news outlet report that the 22-year-old Levski Sofia star has attracted the attention of Philippe Clement’s side and is available for around €3m (£2.5m).
Clubs in France and Turkey are also interested but according to journalist Jose Miguel Dominguez, Rangers’ participation in Europe is a big factor in the process and could help their chase for a player who was the “best defender in his league” this season.
Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen transfer strategy paying off
It was reported in the January transfer window that the transfer strategy at Ibrox was going to change in the coming windows as they target different regions, with South America touted as a target area.
Mohammed Diomande and Oscar Cortes were part of that plan and both have been excellent in their short time at the club, and if Cordoba was to be signed and follow a similar trajectory it could only be a good thing.
The centre of defence has been a problem area this season with injuries, and Connor Goldson’s future has been called into doubt after his most recent issue and interest from Saudi Arabia.
Ben Davies is also expected to leave the club after limited opportunities, with Leon Balogun out of contract too, so the position needs to be strengthened.
At £2.5million the club would be using their limited budget wisely in the market for a problem position and getting in someone with great potential. It’s a win-win situation.
In other Rangers news, the club are closing in on the signing of one sensation on their first professional contract ahead of Premier League giants.
