Rangers urged to sign ‘unreal’ Jose Cordoba after what has been said

Stevie Clifford has urged Rangers to sign Levski Sofia ace Jose Cordoba this summer after the club were linked with a summer transfer move.

The Daily Record reported [9 May], referencing an article by El Marcador TV, that the Gers hold a “strong” interest in the 23-year-old defender, who is about to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

Philippe Clement’s defence has experienced some blows recently, with Connor Goldson injured and linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, while Leon Balogun’s contract is set to expire at the season’s end.

Speaking to The Rangers Review on Thursday (9 May), the Four Lads Had A Dream journalist reacted to the transfer news.

“I’d say the only player safe at centre-back is John Souttar,” he said. “I would think they’ll be looking for a left-sided defender to complement him.

“Jose Cordoba is a left-sided centre-back, who is strong, powerful, likes a long pass, and has a bit of pace.

“Football Manager players will know about Cordoba. He is one of your go-to bargain buys at the start of every game. He’s absolutely unreal and you can offload him for a lot more money once he gets much better.

“I’d love to think that there is some truth in this. He was linked last summer and in January, and is entering the last year of his contract. It’s an interesting one. I’ve heard some names and he is definitely one who would tick a few boxes.”

Philippe Clement must target Jose Cordoba to boost Rangers defence

Considering the ageing squad, transfer links away from Ibrox and the lack of players fitting Clement’s style of football, Rangers must throw everything at the Cordoba signing.

The 23-year-old is already an established international defender with Panama, having made 87 appearances for Levski Sofia, albeit in the Bulgarian first division.

The Gers are set to be very low on defensive options next season, especially if the rumours surrounding the current squad are true. James Tavernier, Ben Davies, Borna Barisic, Goldson and Balogun could all leave this summer.

Clement has already started to build something special at Ibrox, whether he pips Old Firm rivals Celtic to the Scottish Premiership title or not.

The Hoops will be extremely worried if the Belgian receives the backing he needs during the summer transfer window, and that should start with Cordoba.

Of course, with Nils Koppen now at the club, Rangers will able to scout the defender properly, though more than just one centre-back will likely be needed during the window.

Rangers fans need to prepare themselves for a very wild summer as Ibrox looks set to undergo a massive surgery on the current squad before a whole host of new players arrive.
