Liam Kelly would become Rangers traitor if he’s seduced by Brendan Rodgers at Celtic
Rangers may have a new villain to go against soon if rumours that Celtic want to sign Liam Kelly become a reality.
Writing on their website (8 May), the Daily Mail report that Brendan Rodgers wants to sign the Motherwell goalkeeper for the 2024/25 season with Joe Hart set to retire from professional football.
But eagle-eyed fans will know that the 28-year-old came through the academy at Rangers, and it would be a cardinal sin for someone to cross that border.
Obviously it has been done before. Kenny Miller notoriously played for both sides but he wasn’t a Rangers man through and through. He came through the academy at Hibernian and found himself at Ibrox during his career, so it’s not quite the same.
Mo Johnston did it the other way around, moving to Celtic first before representing Rangers later in his career, but again he wasn’t a product of anyone’s academy.
Kelly never made it to the first-team at Ibrox, but he’s still one of our own. The rivalry is too fierce to just flippantly switch sides like that.
Liam Kelly must reject Celtic as a Rangers lad
Kelly will have an idea in his mind for his own individual career, but he will have alternative options this summer.
His performances for Motherwell have attracted interest and there is said to be interest from England as well, which will surely be more lucrative than a move to Celtic Park.
Yes he’ll have European football and a chance for trophies, but it would be at the expense of Rangers. If he has any sense of loyalty in him, he wouldn’t want to do that.

If he decides to go against that and instead signs for the Hoops after talks with Rodgers, then he can expect all sorts of abuse to go his way from the stands when he next visits Ibrox. He will be forever known as a traitor.
If that’s something that he wants to do then it’s on him. But he has the chance to prove his loyalty to Rangers by turning down that move, harming their plans and cementing himself as being Rangers.
