Barry Ferguson issues Rangers warning on how to deal with Callum McGregor in Celtic Old Firm clash

Barry Ferguson has told Rangers that they must not allow Callum McGregor to turn and start attacks during the clash with Celtic on Saturday 11 May.

The two Old Firm clubs will meet at Celtic Park in a huge clash that could decide where the SPFL title goes this season, with the home team currently holding the advantage going into the game.

Ex-Gers captain Ferguson has told GoRadio (8 May) that Rangers must look to stop their rivals’ captain at all costs if they want to win, and that means fouling him at every opportunity if necessary.

“He (McGregor) starts the attacks,” he said.

“They’re just little passes but they’re important passes. Rangers need to make sure Callum McGregor is facing back to Joe Hart every time he gets the ball. And if he does turn you, take a foul.”

Rangers must stay focused and disciplined to beat Celtic

Ahead of the game at Ibrox last month, Philippe Clement’s side were the favourites but made things difficult for themselves by conceding inside the opening 30 seconds.

That immediately gave them a mountain to climb and while they eventually got back into it, they lost concentration once again and had to climb out of a position once more.

But while the fans stuck behind them in that game and helped them over the line, they will not have that luxury at Celtic Park where the environment and atmosphere will be as hostile as ever.

Clement will need to set a plan and a trap to come away with a vital win, because a draw simply won’t be enough to get the title back to the blue half of Glasgow.

Ferguson is well versed in these games and that advice on how to stop McGregor is certainly something that should be listened to.

In other Rangers news, the club want to sign this 22-year-old defender who is “the best in his league”.
