Rangers chiefs want to strike new Oscar Cortes loan deal as December twist emerges
Rangers, Lens and Oscar Cortes are set to decide on the player’s future in the coming days, according to Canal RCN.
The Colombian broadcaster reported online (6 May) that the Gers are keen on extending Cortes’ loan, which is currently set to come to an end this month, until December.
The forward was injured during a 2-1 win over Kilmarnock on 28 February and has not been seen since, with Rangers keen to determine how long the 20-year-old will be sidelined for and if surgery will be required.
By extending his stay until December, Philippe Clement’s side will be able to properly assess the Colombian before deciding on whether or not to sign him permanently next January.
Rangers and Lens are set to discuss in the coming days whether the forward will continue in Scotland or return to France this month.
Rangers supporters and Philippe Clement will be keen to see more of Oscar Cortes at Ibrox
Cortes made a promising start to life at Ibrox and supporters will be keen to see more of him next season.
Bringing in a player on a short-term loan and then having that player miss almost the entirety of his stay through injury is by no means ideal, and Clement will be frustrated by the way things have gone.
However, this is something which is out of Rangers and Cortes’ hands, and the fact that they are keen to extend his loan suggests that the club saw enough during his limited time on the pitch to want to keep him around.
Having the exciting wide player available could have played a helping hand in their title race with Glasgow rivals Celtic this season, and Cortes will likely feel as though as he has much more to show off next season.

Considering his injury issues, Rangers wouldn’t be out of line to seek more favourable loan terms from a financial point of view this time around, and supporters must wait and see what decision the clubs reach.
