Todd Cantwell ‘stupidity’ blasted by BBC Scotland pundit after Rangers incident v Kilmarnock

Stuart McCall has blasted Todd Cantwell after the midfielder wasted time with an uncontested drop-ball in Rangers’ 4-1 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday (5 May).

Frustrations were running high as Killie took an unexpected lead through a James Tavernier own goal before Joe Wright was sent off for a handball on the goal line.

While all drop-balls are supposed to be uncontested now, that rule was clearly lost on Cyriel Dessers, who kicked the ball first time around. However, after being called back by the referee, Cantwell then battled for the ball despite it being awarded to Kilmarnock, leading to more frustration.

Speaking live via BBC Radio Scotland on Sunday (5 May, 2:05pm), McCall said: “He knows that it’s not a 50/50 ball. It’s Kilmarnock’s ball.

“So this is, you know, lost in translation and he didn’t realise. He just takes it away, but then does the exact same thing and it’s just wasting time. It’s stupidity!”

Todd Cantwell adds to the frustration in Rangers v Kilmarnock

With so much on the line for the Gers, it is understandable that Cantwell was so eager to get play going again, especially having gone 1-0 down at home to Kilmarnock.

Due to Celtic’s 3-0 win over Hearts on Saturday 4 May, Rangers went into the match six points behind the Scottish Premiership leaders and needed a win to keep their hopes alive.

Of course, nothing can ever be that simple as a cross was diverted into the back of his own net by Tavernier, totally against the run of play at Ibrox.

With so many contentious decisions, with VAR needing to check several moments during the first half, the Ibrox crowd began booing and whistling, a frustration that clearly got into the players too.

However, as one of the most experienced players in the team, Cantwell should know that he was unable to make any effort to win the ball back as Kilmarnock passed the ball back to their goalkeeper.

Luckily for Philippe Clement, Fabio Silva was able to find the back of the net with the last touch of the first half before Ben Davies poked home for the winner.
