BBC pundit rages live on air after controversial incident in Rangers clash v Kilmarnock
Steven Thompson has been left enraged by the decision to give Kilmarnock defender Joe Wright a red card in their clash with Rangers at Ibrox.
The Light Blues survived an early scare to claim all three points with a 4-1 win over Derek McInnes’ side on Sunday (5 May) thanks to goals from Fabio Silva, Ben Davies, Tom Lawrence and John Souttar.
Philippe Clement’s side had the chance to add to their goal tally in the first half when they were awarded a penalty following a handball from Wright. While BBC pundit Thompson believed it was a penalty he didn’t think it warranted a sending-off.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland (5 May, 13:23) he said: “Oh you are kidding. You’re kidding me! It’s flicked off of him. That is so, so harsh. So, so harsh. He’s not deliberately tried to stop it in my opinion.”
Will Rangers win the Premiership title or do Celtic now lead the race?
Wright was arguably quite unfortunate as it was clear that he did not mean to handle the ball, but by denying an almost certain goal, he was always going to be given his marching orders whether it was right or wrong.
While there will always be plenty of debate surrounding the officiating north of the border, and rightly so considering the sheer amount of mistakes, it’s hard to argue that the officials didn’t get this one right at Ibrox.

Ultimately, the sending-off changed the entire momentum of the game as it became a case of attack vs defence as McInnes opted to withdraw a forward, but the Gers won’t complain as it kept their feint title hopes alive.
Whether or not they have what it takes to get a result at Parkhead remains to be seen, but at least Clement’s side are travelling across Glasgow with something to play for between now and the end of the year.
