Philippe Clement shares Oscar Cortes transfer update at Rangers after Ibrox injury blow

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has confirmed that the Light Blues are in talks with Lens over Oscar Cortes ahead of the summer transfer window.

The 20-year-old impressed at Ibrox following his January loan move from the Ligue 1 side, scoring and assisting once in just three Scottish Premiership games before his season was brought to an end through injury.

Clement confirmed ahead of the clash with Kilmarnock that the Colombian wouldn’t play again this term but did admit discussions have already begun with Lens and the Belgian refused to rule out another loan move.

As quoted by the Rangers Review on Friday (3 May) he said: “We are talking with Lens about what the situation is because in this situation it is a different situation from when he was fit. At the moment he was fit he was showing the right things, but it was really short-term. Then it needs to be at the right price.

“That is something to discuss [another loan switch]. We will see what is said in the talks with Lens. I cannot say just now.”

Will Rangers and Philippe Clement sign Oscar Cortes permanently in the summer transfer window?

Clement has received plenty of praise from pundits and supporters alike for his recruitment at Ibrox during the January transfer window and for the most part, it has been wholly deserved.

Both Mohamed Diomande and Cortes have shone when fit since arriving in Glasgow and while neither star came cheap, both transfers may have been a sign that you get what you pay for when it comes to buying from the continent.

But Cortes’ injury woes would have been a cause for concern for the manager and the recruitment team around him at Ibrox. They will be reluctant to foot a big-money bill to sign a player who cannot stay fit week in and week out.

Another loan move may be the perfect solution for all parties as it would allow the Gers to get a proper look at the winger before making a final decision and it would also hand the 20-year-old a chance to prove his fitness.

Either way, it is positive to hear that talks have already begun with Lens ahead of the end of the season.
