Philippe Clement must reward Josh Gentles with Rangers debut after what he did on Wednesday

Philippe Clement was present at Hampden Park as Rangers Under-18s defeated Aberdeen 2-1 to lift the 2024 Scottish Youth Cup title on Wednesday (1 May).

Following a goalless first half, Aberdeen would take the lead through Timothy Akindileni in the 64th minute before Findlay Curtis equalised from the penalty spot.

And with just 14 minutes remaining of the final, Josh Gentles stepped up to volley his side into the lead, which would eventually be the winning goal as the Gers won silverware at Hampden Park.

The 16-year-old Welsh midfielder has a keen eye for goal, and that turned out to be key for Rangers as they pipped the Dons and claimed the ninth Scottish Youth Cup trophy in the club’s history.

Clement has struggled with injuries throughout the current campaign, which could see him turn to Gentles if needed. His name will certainly be on the manager’s mind after his striker on Wednesday night.

The Wales Under-17s international has certainly written himself into the youth history books at Ibrox, whether it was a scuffed volley or not. He remained calm and composed at the vital moment.

While Clement has given few opportunities to young prospects at Ibrox this season, mainly due to him arriving at the club halfway through the season, there will still be hope for Gentles.

Ross McCausland is evidence that if you are good enough, you are old enough. And at just 18 years of age, the Rangers B midfielder will be hoping he can follow a similar journey.

The midfield situation at Ibrox ahead of next season could also be good signs for Gentles. The futures of John Lundstram, Ryan Jack and Nicolas Raskin are all uncertain, which could leave room for a young prospect.

Of course, performances in pre-season will be extremely important for the young stars that have lifted silverware at Hampden Park, and Clement certainly needs to contemplate bringing a couple of these players through to the first team.

In other Rangers news, a manager has admitted he is trying to buy a “great” Ibrox attacker this summer.
