Rangers told to have ‘another look’ at Sam Lammers after record-breaking Utrecht development

Rangers manager Philippe Clement has been told to have “another look” at Sam Lammers by Gordon Dalziel following his record-breaking loan spell with Utrecht.

The 27-year-old only scored twice in 31 games for the Gers but has flourished in the Eredevisie since January, scoring nine goals in 15 matches whilst becoming the first player to ever score in seven consecutive games.

Lammers’ loan switch didn’t contain an option to make the move permanent this summer and whilst Dalziel believes the Dutchman will have many potential suitors, he thinks he has earned another shot at Ibrox.

Speaking on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard (30 May) he said: “I don’t think he had a fair crack of the whip at Rangers and sometimes it take a bit longer to settle in and if he’s know saying he wasn’t played in his favourite position, then it’s very hard to hit the ground running.

“You go on loan to build up gametime, you go on loan to build up confidence and you go out on loan to put yourself back in the window.

“I would definitely have another look at Lammers, but I would be sitting down talking to him and saying, ‘You say you’re a centre-forward, if I’m going to play you, I’ll play you as a centre-forward, you show me what you can do.’

“Then, there is no stone unturned and if you decide after a few months of a few games, whatever it may be that no, he’s not suited to Scottish football, then you can move him on. Obviously people will take him, there’s no doubting that.”

Will Rangers and Philippe Clement keep Sam Lammers during the summer transfer window at Ibrox?

As Dalziel suggested, Lammers was never given an extended run-out under either Michael Beale or Clement as a genuine number nine and his form in the Netherlands this term may show he is capable of impressing in that role.

While Cyriel Dessers has improved as the season has gone on, the Nigerian forward desperately needs some support at the top end of the pitch and the 27-year-old could be the perfect solution to the Light Blues’ striker problem.

It won’t cost Rangers any money to bring him back in the summer and have another look during pre-season. No matter what decision Clement ultimately reaches, it will be a win-win situation for the Gers.

Either they will have a new and in-form number nine ready to play alongside and share the load with Dessers at the top end of the pitch, or they will have a sellable asset on the radar of a number of teams this summer.

Which route the Gers will take remains unclear, but it feels as though it would be naive to write off Lammers in a Rangers shirt just yet.
