Philippe Clement Manager of the Year snub no surprise despite new Rangers treble admission

Peter Grant has admitted that he is “not surprised” Rangers manager Philippe Clement and Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers haven’t been nominated for manager of the year.

Both Old Firm managers were not included in the three-man shortlist for the Premiership award, despite their clubs sitting at the top of the table, with Derek McInnes, Tony Docherty and John McGlynn the three nominees.

While the Light Blues and Clement could still lift a domestic treble between now and the end of the season, Go Radio pundit Grant doesn’t believe the Gers have been consistent enough for the Belgian to deserve the award.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (30 May) he said: “I’m not surprised, no. This run they’re [Celtic] on has been phenomenal when you think of the difficulties they’ve been through, especially with home games.

“There’s games that they’ve lost and dropped points in and that consistency hasn’t been there. There have been a lot of changes with injuries but you’ve still got to manage that. Rangers are similar. Brendan could win a Double and Clement could win a Treble.”

Will Rangers or Celtic win the Scottish Premiership this season?

While the initial turnaround under Clement at Ibrox this season was excellent, the Gers’ wobble in the Premiership probably couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Rangers boss in terms of award season.

The Light Blues have been nowhere near their best in the last few weeks with matches against Dundee and Ross County seeing the Gers fall away from Celtic in the race for the title this season.

While a couple of games don’t necessarily define the season, it could have been enough for Clement to miss out on a nomination for this season’s award. Ultimately, the Belgian won’t be too bothered by individual accolades when the biggest prizes remain up for grabs.

Celtic and Rodgers may be in the driving seat in the title race, but the Gers can still drag themselves back into the race. It won’t be easy and it will take a win at Parkhead but one or two wins could change the entire dynamic around Clement and the season as a whole.
