James Tavernier spotted supporting Rangers U18s at Hampden Park in Scottish Youth Cup final

James Tavernier has been spotted supporting Rangers Under-18s in their Scottish Youth Cup final at Hampden Park.

The Gers’ Under-18s side are facing off against Aberdeen’s Under-18s, with head coach Philippe Clement also in attendance.

Rangers captain Tavernier has been linked with a departure from the club this summer, with Saudi Arabian clubs – including former Gers boss Steven Gerrard’s new side Al-Ettifaq – thought to be interested in a move for the right-back [Daily Record].

James Tavernier Rangers departure on the cards

Tavernier joined Rangers in the summer of 2015 from Wigan after a journeyman start to his career in which he was loaned out seven times – six of which by Newcastle United, who he joined after developing in Leeds United’s academy system.

Since then, he has gone on to make 455 appearances across all competitions for the Gers, scoring 125 goals and registering 128 assists – phenomenal numbers for a full-back.

The 32-year-old has skippered the side since 2018, winning five trophies in his time at Ibrox, including the Scottish Premiership, Scottish FA Cup and Scottish League Cup.

However, that long association appears to be drawing to an end, with speculation rife that the right-back could be set to move to a Saudi Arabian club in the summer – Gerrard’s Al-Ettifaq seems to be the most likely destination.

Tavernier has been a superb servant for Rangers over the years, but as he enters the final two years of his contract at the age of 32, there is an argument for cashing in on the defender should an appropriate offer arrive.

If Tavernier does indeed move on, he will hope to leave on a high as Rangers chase a cup double – and potentially even the Scottish Premiership title.

In other Rangers news, a manager has admitted he is trying to buy a “great” Ibrox attacker this summer.
