Rangers and Celtic title prediction made by Paul Lambert ahead of Old Firm showdown

Paul Lambert says the Rangers and Celtic title battle will come down to who wins the upcoming Old Firm showdown.

Celtic hold a three-point advantage on the Light Blues at the Scottish Premiership summit with five rounds of fixtures still to play.

After facing Hearts and Kilmarnock respectively next weekend, the pair will then face off at Celtic Park on 11 May.

Former Celtic player Lambert considers Celtic as the title favourites at this point, but admits that could change in the next fortnight.

“I think Celtic are favourites. Rangers had their chance at Ibrox a few weeks ago,” he told Sky Sports News [30 April, 10:13am].

“Celtic have looked great in the past few weeks and momentum is now with them. But it will come down to the Old Firm game.

“If Celtic win that then it’s over, without a doubt. Celtic are playing well, Rangers are stuttering. You can never truly predict how it will go.

“But with home advantage, full of Celtic fans in the stadium, I just think Celtic are in the strongest position at the minute to get it again.”

Celtic v Rangers set up to be title decider

Lambert is not wrong in what he says. It could have been Rangers clear at the top had they turned up in the most recent Old Firm.

As it is, they settled for a 2-2 draw – not the worst result on the face of it – but then came a loss to Ross County and draw at Dundee.

Those two results could well come back to haunt Philippe Clement’s men, but there is a huge chance to change all that coming up.

If the Gers can come through this weekend’s visit of Kilmarnock unscathed, three points are then a must away at Celtic the following week.

No matter what side of the divide you are on, these next few weeks are going to be incredibly tense.

If Rangers can win five from five and pip Celtic to top spot, it will be one of the sweetest title triumphs ever.
