Scottish Government warning mooted after Rangers and Celtic wins in Scottish Premiership
Keith Jackson has joked about a Scottish Government warning after Rangers and Celtic both scraped 2-1 wins on Sunday (28 April).
Philippe Clement’s side kept their title hopes alive with a slender win over St Mirren in Paisley, with Celtic doing the same against Dundee.
A James Bolton own goal opened the scoring for the Gers before Mikael Mandron pegged them back just five minutes later, as Cyriel Dessers went on to score the winner late on.
Writing for the Daily Record (29 April), Jackson has shared his view on the title race making a statement about public health for fans.
He said: “Granted, the Scottish government has a considerable amount on its plate at the moment.
“But, even so, someone somewhere inside the house on the hill may have to take a moment over the coming days to consider if the time has come to issue a public health warning, where this season’s climax to the domestic football season is concerned.
“Because, while neither Rangers nor Celtic appear to have the heart to finish off the job they started back in August, the consequence of their combined inadequacies can’t possibly be good for the old ticker.”
Did Rangers deserve to win v St Mirren?
By hook or by crook, the Light Blues managed to secure three points as Dessers headed home his 20th goal of the season.
It has to be said, Rangers dominated possession as they held 74 per cent of the ball throughout the 90 minutes [FotMob]. This saw them make over 400 passes compared to St Mirren’s 142.
They managed to translate this control into chances as they created an xG of 1.74 while the home side only mustered 0.85 of their own.
This was created via 20 shots with six on target across two big chances, as one of those was missed.
St Mirren had their moments and of course, got on the scoresheet to level the game and certainly tested Jack Butland many times.

It was frustrating that Clement’s side couldn’t make their domination count with more than one clumsily defended goal.
With the title race in mind, Rangers just have to win and that is what they did.
