Keith Jackson shares Rangers title verdict in Scottish Premiership for Daily Record

Rangers do not look like a side that can win the Scottish Premiership title despite their 2-1 win over St Mirren, according to Keith Jackson.

The Daily Record journalist said that neither Rangers nor Celtic are currently putting in performances or results befitting of title winners, and whichever side improves their form will have “plenty” to celebrate at the end of the season.

Rangers left it late to defeat St Mirren 2-1 in Paisley with a 75th-minute goal from Cyriel Dessers, but Celtic’s victory over Dundee by the same scoreline maintains their three-point gap at the top.

When asked if Rangers look like a title-winning team in the Daily Record (29 April, page 39), Jackson said: “Nope. The only thing going in their favour right now is that neither do Celtic.

“If one of them manages to get its act together over the next four weeks, then they’ll have plenty to feel good about this summer.”

Rangers back in Scottish Premiership title race after St Mirren win

Rangers went into their match against St Mirren without a win in their last three Premiership matches, missing out on the chance to overtake Celtic at the summit.

As mentioned by Jackson, Philippe Clement’s side put in a winning performance that was still far from convincing at St Mirren Park, requiring an own goal from James Bolton and several Jack Butland saves to maintain a 1-1 scoreline at the break.

The Gers pressed to break the deadlock again for much of the second half, with Dessers resorting to firing off several speculative shots as St Mirren dug deep with the clock ticking down.

However, Dessers was on the money when it mattered for Rangers, finding some rare space in the box to nod James Tavernier’s pinpoint cross beyond Zach Hemming and winning the game for Clement’s side.

It may not have been pretty, but for the first time in four matches, Rangers got the job done, and at this stage of the season, both Jackson and Clement will know that finding a way to win three points is the most important thing for both the Gers and their Old Firm rivals.
