Cyriel Dessers defended by Sky Sports pundit as ‘Rangers fans expect more’ from him

Kenny Miller has praised Cyriel Dessers for his reliability for Rangers this season after he scored his 20th goal of the season against St Mirren.

The game started well for the Gers as Luke Bolton’s own goal put them 1-0 up with just over 30 minutes on the clock.

This lead lasted less than five minutes as Mikael Mandron’s header was enough to score past Jack Butland and equalise.

With 15 minutes left on the clock, Dessers scored what proved to be the match-winning goal as he hit 20 Rangers goals in all competitions this season.

The Nigeria international has come under pressure this season but Miller came out in his defence while speaking on Sky Sports Football (28 April).

He said: “He could have had a lot more if he had been on penalties as well. I think the Rangers fans expect more from a number nine. He’s the one that’s been there every single week, he’s not missed games through injury.

“Roofe’s been out his time, Silva’s come in as a potential number nine but he’s been there every single week. Today, his 20th goal that’s not a bad return for your first season at Rangers considering the criticism people have thrown at him over the course of the season.”

How has Cyriel Dessers performed for Rangers this season?

Dessers, 29, joined the Gers in the summer from Cremonese of Serie B for a fee in the region of £4.3 million.

He had scored seven goals and registered two assists [FotMob] in his spell with the Italian outfit so hadn’t set the world alight with them.

Since making the move to Glasgow, he has scored 14 goals in the league, one in the League Cup, Europa League and Champions League. Adding to this three Scottish Cup goals.

Considering it is his first season in a new country and league, this return is healthy albeit Rangers are struggling in the title race.

Rangers
Cyriel Dessers scored 22 Scottish Premiership goals last season

He has scored some big goals. He bagged a brace against Hearts in the Cup semi-final (21 April) which saw them through to the final.

Dessers has just four goals less than James Tavernier who of course takes penalties for Clement’s side and has scored 12 of them.

There is no doubt that his performances could be improved but no one can argue with his goal return and impact.
