BBC Sport pundit gushes over ‘incredible’ Rangers ace James Tavernier after what he did v St Mirren

Rangers captain James Tavernier left Neil McCann stunned with his “incredible” cross to assist Cyriel Dessers in the Gers’ clash with St Mirren.

Philippe Clement’s side got back to winning ways in the Scottish Premiership with a 2-1 win on Sunday (28 April) with an own goal from James Bolton and Dessers’ second-half header pricing to be the difference between the sides.

While the Nigerian couldn’t miss his chance from close range, most of that was down to the work of Tavernier in the build-up to the goal and the 32-year-old’s cross left BBC pundit McCann lost for words on commentary.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland (28 April, 14:06) he said: “Well I’ve been banging on about crossing for a lot of this game, but my goodness, what a ball that is from James Tavernier.

“The space is always going to be outside because St Mirren’s fullbacks have been dragged into an area because Todd Cantwell drops into a pocket. He’s on the run and he’s got so much to do but he finds an incredible ball which eliminates the goalkeeper.

“Dessers has just pulled off and it is the easiest of headers.”

Will James Tavernier leave Rangers in the summer transfer window amid Saudi rumours?

Tavernier has come in for plenty of criticism for his performances so far this season, but once again, the Rangers skipper stood up and delivered when it counted with yet another delightful cross into the box.

His ball into the area for Dessers on Sunday left the St Mirren defence with no chance of clearing it as it took out the entire backline and keeper in a single action. Those moments of magic set him apart from the rest of the squad at Ibrox.

James Tavernier has had a stellar Rangers career

There have been various suggestions in recent weeks that the Light Blues could sell the Englishman this summer amid interest from Saudi Arabia, but the win over St Mirren showed he is far too important to the Gers.

Hopefully, the Gers take note of his display in Sunday’s match and do everything they can to keep him beyond the end of the season. Without him, they would be nowhere near Celtic in the race for the title.
