Connor Goldson to be benched for Rangers clash v St Mirren amid fresh Ibrox exit talk

Barry Ferguson has suggested that Connor Goldson could be benched for Rangers v St Mirren amid transfer rumours linking him away from Ibrox.

The past week has seen Goldson and James Tavernier be linked by the Daily Record (24 April) to Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq.

Ferguson has suggested that the centre-back should be dropped as the Gers travel to face the Saints in the Scottish Premiership.

Writing for the Daily Record (26 April), he said: “Balogun, Diomande and Cantwell were particularly impressive and those three names would be the first on my team sheet for Sunday even if that means leaving big Goldson on the bench.

“For me, where it’s almost always been a question of who plays next to Goldson, it’s now about choosing the best man to partner Balogun.”

Should Rangers drop Connor Goldson?

After signing from Brighton in 2018, Goldson has become one of Rangers’ more important players under various managers.

This has seen him make over 300 appearances for the Light Blues and has played his part in some hugely memorable moments.

He has made 30 starts this season and registered an assist [FotMob] has been a virtual ever-present under Philippe Clement.

In the Scottish Cup semi-final v Hearts, the Englishman was dropped as Balogun came back in and performed well.

The Nigerian has made just 11 starts this campaign which has seen him feature across just 904 minutes compared to Goldson’s 2,695.

There is no doubt that Balogun was on top form against Hearts as he, John Souttar and Jack Butland shut out the Maroons at Hampden.

The rumours linking Goldson away shouldn’t affect his place in the starting XI. If Clement feels he isn’t the best option then it is fair.

Balogun was good against Hearts and is deserving of a chance but Goldson may not be deserving of being dropped.
