Philippe Clement can offload £70,000-a-week Rangers wages by getting rid of Ibrox duo

Steven Gerrard’s Al Ettifaq are interested in signing James Tavernier and Connor Goldson as Rangers look to free up wages, according to the Daily Record.

The Englishman departed the Gers in November 2021 for Aston Villa as he ended his three-year spell as manager at Ibrox.

He has since made a move to Saudi Arabia with Al Ettifaq and is now interested in bringing Rangers stars to the Pro League.

Keith Jackson has suggested that the move could suit both parties as the Light Blues free up space on the wage bill.

He said: “Both Tavernier and Goldson have two years still to run on their Rangers contracts and are among the top five earners in Philippe Clement’s squad.

“It’s believed the Belgian boss could free up around £70,000-a-week in wages ahead of his own dealings in the summer transfer market by agreeing to let them cash in on the interest from the Middle East.”

Could Rangers sell James Tavernier?

The Englishman has been consistent since joining the club in July 2015 and is as important as anyone to the Gers’ side.

He has made 454 appearances since signing from Wigan Athletic and has scored an amazing 125 goals for the club.

This season, Tavernier has once again been on fire. He has scored 17 goals and assisted a further eight under Clement [FotMob].

He has been superb in an attacking sense but that hasn’t stopped him being a defensive stalwart. So far this campaign he has made 39 tackles, and won 180 duels while being dribbled past just 22 times.

James Tavernier
Four Lads think James Tavernier is in a “will he, won’t he” situation with his Rangers future

Given that he is the Light Blues’ top scorer and assister it could prove detrimental to let him go over the summer.

Take away his 25 goal involvements and where could Rangers be?

His penalty duties will go elsewhere but losing his free-kick ability and the impact he has as a captain won’t be easy to replace.

Even if it frees up the wage bill there are no guarantees it will be a positive mood for either party.
