Mark Guidi shares new Connor Goldson update live on air amid Rangers exit speculation

Rangers defender Connor Goldson’s time at Ibrox “is coming to an end” amid growing transfer speculation, according to Mark Guidi.

The 31-year-old Englishman was dropped by Philippe Clement for the Gers’ Scottish Cup semi-final win over Hearts and has been linked with a potential summer move to the Saudi Pro League alongside James Tavernier [Daily Record, 24 April].

While nothing is set in stone and Clement has insisted Goldson was just rested on Sunday (21 April) Sunday Mail’s chief football writer Guidi expects the Gers will “upgrade” their backline this summer.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (24 April, 9:10) he said: “I have to be honest, I think Connor Goldson’s been at Rangers for what four years? If not longer, I think he’s had lots of praise and rightly so, but it was the right decision to take him out of the team.

“I said that a couple of weeks ago, I think his time is coming to an end. Rangers need to upgrade at the heart of defence, it’s just not good enough. They need to find a new partnership and I would have John Souttar as part of that partnership.

Will Rangers and Philippe Clement sell Connor Goldson in the summer transfer window?

Goldson has come in for plenty of criticism over the last few weeks at Ibrox, with supporters and pundits alike slamming the centre-back for his ineffective displays that have coincided with the Gers’ dip in form in the Premiership.

It is no secret that Clement’s side looked much more solid with a partnership of Leon Balogun and Souttar at Hampden Park and it seems unlikely that Goldson will be able to force his way back in against St Mirren.

The Light Blues are expected to invest this summer in a bid to strengthen ahead of another title challenge next season. But additions won’t be made unless players also head the other way and the defender seems set to be one of those players.

As Guidi suggested, Goldson deserves plenty of credit for the majority of his performances across his tenure in Glasgow. However, it feels as though his time has run out at Ibrox and it could be best for all parties if he moves on.
