Rangers must act now to secure Tommy Conway transfer as Bristol City contract update emerges

Rangers boss Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen must move now to secure a transfer for Bristol City striker Tommy Conway after a new contract update.

There had been reports of links between the Scottish youth international with the Ibrox club and Old Firm rivals Celtic in the January transfer window, while Premier League clubs are also believed to be monitoring his progress [Bristol Live, 6 February].

Conway’s current contract at Ashton Gate runs until the summer of 2025, but Robins boss Liam Manning has revealed the striker has been offered a new deal, but also admitted no agreement has been reached between the club and player.

As quoted by Bristol Live (24 April) he said: “Not at the moment. We’re really keen to keep him. I think we’ve been quite clear on that. An offer has gone into him so the decision will be with him, ultimately.

“He’s been great, I love working with him. He’s been one, I think we can have a real positive impact on his career. I don’t think he’s someone who has to chase anything too soon.

“Tommy’s someone who we want to keep and the ball’s in his court now.”

Conway has been a regular feature in the Robins’ frontline when fit this season, scoring nine goals and laying one assist in 37 appearances, while also hitting the headlines for his winning goal against West Ham United in the FA Cup.

His goals against Premier League opposition will have likely only increased the interest in him ahead of the summer transfer window and time could be running out for the Gers to swoop in and secure his signature.

Will Philippe Clement and Rangers sign a new striker in the summer transfer window at Ibrox?

Pundits and supporters alike have been in agreement that the Gers could do with a new number nine in the summer transfer window. While Cyriel Dessers has shown signs of improvement, he still lacks the consistency required for a team challenging for the title.

While the likes of Bojan Miovski and Lawrence Shankland have been tipped to complete the switch to Glasgow, Conway may represent a bit of a bargain for the Light Blues, especially if he decides against penning a new deal.

As Manning suggested, the ball is in the striker’s court and therefore he could be reluctant to sign on the dotted line if he knows other parties are interested in securing his signature.

If Clement and Koppen are genuinely interested in the 21-year-old ahead of the summer transfer window, they have to act now to bring him north of the border, but it remains to be seen whether or not they will pursue this deal further.
